Traditional solid-wall homes were generally built with softer, more porous bricks and lime-based mortar. They were designed to manage small amounts of moisture by allowing it to evaporate through the joints.

Modern cement mortar is dense and relatively impermeable by comparison. It can be a sound choice for suitable modern brickwork, particularly where it matches the original specification. However, using a hard cement-rich mix in an older wall can force moisture to find another route out, often through the softer brick itself.

That is why mortar should usually be softer and more breathable than the masonry it surrounds. The moisture issue homeowners often miss

The right type of lime still matters. Non-hydraulic lime sets slowly through exposure to air, while natural hydraulic lime has a more reliable set in damper or more exposed conditions. Good repointing is about preparation as much as mortar
